Born on November 15, 1928 in Audubon, IA, Bill Fries grew up in a musical family in which
both his parents were musicians.
Bill inherited a love for music and mastered the clarinet in grade school. Later,
Bill was a drum major at his high school and a member of the concert band at the
University of Iowa where he majored in fine arts.
After a stint in television both behind and in front of the camera, Bill moved into
advertising with the B & J Agency in Omaha. One campaign for the Metz Baking
Company set the stage for a new career for the advertising director. Bill won a Clio
for "Best Television Campaign" which featured C.W. McCall (a trucker for Old
Home Bread), Mavis (a waitress) and a truckstop (The Old Home Filler-Up An' Keep On-A
Truckin' Cafe).
A friend then suggested he do a recording as "C.W. McCall" and cut The Old Home
Filler-Up An' Keep On-A Truckin' Cafe on American Gramaphone which was later picked up by
MGM.
After six albums of original material on MGM and Poldor, Bill
decided to leave the recording business and settled in Ouray, Colorado where he served as
the town's mayor.
Bill passed away at 93 on April 1, 2022.
